Fighting Temptations

2ftBy Jerome Baker

One thing young people will eventually have to do deal with is temptation. From my experiences temptation is something that you can not take lightly, you have to stand up and boldly fight temptations. Temptation is when you are enticed to do contrary to God’s will. James 1:14 says it like this: But each one is tempted when he is drawn away by his own desires and enticed. Often times temptation comes before God promotes us, when dealing with sinful pleasures, when peers put us under pressure, during times of persecution, and when we are believing God to prosper us and it seems like He is taking to long.

No doubt, temptation has a strong sway and if given the chance, temptation can snuff us out. Temptation knocked on Eve’s door and it took her out. Temptation annihilated the mighty Samson. And temptation moved Peter out the will of God. So, here are some ways you can maintain good works and endure your temptations and be victorious in life.

1. You always have a choice.
No matter what is tempting you, remember you always have a choice. You can yield to what is pulling on you or you can resist it. Delilah tempted Samson so hard and so often that it got on his nerves until he stopped resisting the temptation to tell her his secret (Judges 16:16). Fight off temptation by doing such things as choosing to change friends, changing your mind, believe God’s report, etc. When you are in God’s will someone or something will like try to tempt you to do something else because you are headed towards receiving a promise of God.

2. Watch out for weak points.
Jesus was at His weakest point in his life and He was questioning God if there was another way. Yet, He prayed earnestly and did not enter into temptation. When life and circumstances seemingly have your back against the wall temptation looks good. But remember Jesus, fight the urge to take the easy way out. Your faith will be tried, so watch out for tricks of the enemy and stay prayed up.
Mark 14:38 Watch and pray, lest you enter into temptation. The spirit indeed is willing, but the flesh is weak.

3. There’s liberation from temptation.
It may appear bigger than you, but you can handle whoever or whatever is tempting you. God allows temptation to come to try our faith at times. But remember, if He allows it to come at you, He designed it just for you. Whatever afflicts you God can deliver you from it (Psalms 34:19).
1 Corinthians 10:13 No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.

4. Temptation last a season.
Learn lessons from the things you triumph over because it will return. Temptation doesn’t last for ever but we have to deal with it for ever here on earth. You’re coming out of what you’re going through but don’t forget, temptation is like Arnold Schwarzenegger in the movie Terminator, “I’ll be back!”
Luke 4:13 Now when the devil had ended every temptation, he departed from Him until an opportune time.
